The 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac is an all-new crossover vehicle from Ford combining the comfort of a four-door
SUV and the versatility and cargo space of a pickup truck. It is available in
one trim level with a choice of both 2WD and 4WD. The chassis is engineered for
greater ride comfort, the Sport Trac is longer and stiffer than the Explorer and this stiffness makes the vehicle
more agile and on and off the road. The 4.0-liter single overhead cam (SOHC) V-6
engine offers refine performance at all driving conditions, but can be bouncy
at times.
Also, the Sport Trac's powertrain meets California's Low Emission Vehicle (LEV)
Standards. Acceleration is adequate from the OHV V6 engine, but can be sluggish
and averaged only 15.9 mpg. Automatic transmission is offered as standard instead
of optional. For 2001, a revised 2-door model called the Sport joined the new
Sport Trac. The 4 door was dropped later in the year and was replaced by an all-new
model also called Explorer. Also for 2001, 210-horsepower V6 engine replaced the
standard 160-horsepower V6.
