The Ford Explorer has been the subject of recalls in recent years. In December
of 2000, Ford Motors recalled 876,413 Explorers to replace faulty parts of the
suspension system. The Explorer has figured in a number of deadly accidents caused
d ue to rollovers. It is speculated that the Explorer was not equipped to handle
emergency maneuvers at interstate highway speeds.
Also, the vehicle may not be equipped with safety features that would protect
the passengers in case a rollover occurs. Sport utility vehicles with a high center
of gravity and swing axle suspension in the design are more prone to rollovers.
In October 2001, accidents involving tread separation and blowouts of Firestone
tires installed in Ford Explorers reached a death toll of 271 with more than 800 injuries.
